Screen the resumes and application to gain information for the interview. Standardize and prepare the questions you will ask each applicant. Lack of purpose - Not only are you trying to determine the best applicant, but you also have to convince the applicant that this is the best place for them to work. Today's workers have many more choices and job opportunities to choose from. Lack of clearly defined job competencies - Each job can have anywhere from 6-14 job competencies. Identify the behaviors, knowledge, motivations and qualities incumbents need to have to be successful in the job. There are several assessments and profiles available to help insure you have a good match between the applicant and the job. Lack of structure - The best interview follows a structured process. A structured approach helps avoid bias and gives all applicants a fair chance. The best ways to accomplish this is by using behavioral based questions, role-plays and situational questions. Here are some examples: Behavioral based questions are used to evaluate the applicant's past behavior, experience and initiative such as: Give me an example when you . . . Describe an incident where you went over and beyond the call of duty . . . Tell me about the time you reached out for additional responsibility . . . Tell me about the largest project you worked on . . . Situational based questions evaluate the applicant's judgment ability and knowledge. The interviewer first gives the applicant a hypothetical situation such as: "You are a manager and one of your employees has just told you that he thinks another worker is stealing merchandise from the store." What should you do? What additional information should you obtain? How many options do you have? When or if should you call the police? Sample role-plays are effective ways to learn and practice new skills. They can also be used during the interview process to determine the skills and personal charisma of people during stress. For example, if you are interviewing a customer service representative you can use a role-play to see how this person can manage an irate customer. When using role-plays consider the following guidelines. 1. It is a good idea to write the situation down on paper. Give the person time or a short break to "get into character" prior to beginning the role-play. 2. Give the candidate clear guidelines and background information so they thoroughly understand the situation. 3. Allow them to ask questions before you begin. 4. Debrief the applicant at the conclusion of the role-play. Ask them to tell you how they thought they did and how they could have done it differently. Conclude the role-play in a positive way. Mary Duggan Mary Duggan, Spotfield, Bekan. The sudden death of Mary Duggan of Spotfield, Bekan, on Wednesday, May 31, caused widespread grief and shock among her family, friends and all who knew her. Mary was born on March 17, 1922, to Michael and Catherine Delaney, Ballybane, Brickens, the fifth child in a family of 11. After finishing school, Mary worked for a time at the bacon factory in Claremorris. She married John Duggan in November 1944 and lived for the past 63 years in Spotfield. Mary and John were a great team enjoying life and working together to provide for their family. While John did some contracting work, May managed and tended to the farm. She worked hard, as farm work in those days was manual and without the benefits of the mechanised system today, but Mary made no secret of it that she loved the land and loved her family for whom she provided. Mary was a courageous woman who was never afraid of challenge or a heavy cross. Indeed, her crosses were many. She and John lost five children, three of whom died after short illnesses. Then, in 1972, her husband, John, died aged 54 after a short illness and in 1982, her son, Tom, died aged 26. Mary faced each trial with courage as she was a woman of deep faith, prayer and devotion. Her life was one long deep relationship with the Lord. Her particular devotion to the Eucharist and to Our Lady was a great source of strength to her. Despite her crosses, Mary will be remembered as a warm hearted woman, witty, full of fun and good-humoured. She was skilled in telling a yarn or putting her own twist on a story. She loved the company of family and friends, was a great entertainer and was known for her kindness to her neighbours and friends, especially those in great need. She was an outgoing, modern woman who was one of the first in the neighbourhood to drive a car. This was not only her mode of transport but also her vehicle to independence. Mary was a caring mother and, as her adult children began their own families, she helped with the grandchildren. She took great delight in seeing her 14 young adult grandchildren succeed so well, but her joy was complete at the birth of her youngest grandchildren - triplets born five years ago in New York. Mary travelled over for their christening. This was one of many trips she made to the States. She loved these occasions in a very special way and was a seasoned traveller who developed a great love for New York and America. She maintained a youthful outlook and always dressed impeccably. Mid West Radio had become a special part of her life over the past two decades. It kept her informed about things happening around the region and entertained her late into the night with some favourite music and songs from over the years. Mary took a keen interest in current affairs and followed the political scene closely. Just a few days before her sudden death, she cast her vote in the General Election. She was a firm believer in expressing one viewpoint through the ballot box. In his homily at the funeral Mass, Fr Mullins said that through the devotion, care and love of her family, Mary life got better and better every day as she discovered more and more sweetness and joy like one discovering the sugar unmixed at the bottom of the cup. Her removal took place on Saturday, June 2 from her home to Bekan Church. She was buried in Bekan Cemetery on Sunday following Mass for the repose of her soul. The very large attendance at the wake, removal, funeral Mass and burial reflected the high esteem in which she and her family are held in the area. The Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr Patrick Mullins. Members of her family read the scripture readings, sang the psalms, said the prayers of the faithful, and brought gifts, symbolic of her life, to the altar at the offertory, accompanied by a commentary. Mary is deeply regretted by her sons, Martin (Castlerea), Jim (Bekan), John (Oranmore), daughters, Margaret Gribben (New York), Mary Martin (Dublin), Caroline Carty (New York), daughters-in-law, Breege, Bridie, Eileen and Ann Marie, sons-in-law, Michael Gribben, Sean Martin and Mike Carty, her seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, sister, Susan Delaney (Ballybane), brother, Frank (Manchester), sister-in-law, Mary Gallagher (Granlahan), her many nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends, including her kind and great neighbours.
